Irish raider is new Derby favourite after impressing in trials
Mark Wallis has been nibbled at to upset the odds on Charlie Lister in next week's Betfair Trainers' Championship meeting at Doncaster (March 23, live on Sky Sports).
Wallis's team continued their tip-top form over the weekend with wins, in particular at Hall Green, for the two probable members of his six-bend team, Corrig Vieri and Kinda Easy.
Eye Onthe Storm, a leading contender for this year's Derby, and Kinda Ready, last year's Derby winner, head Wallis's four-bend team and could be up against the likes of Lister flyers Fear Zafonic and Bandicoot Tipoki.
Four four-bend races, two six-bend races, a sprint and a puppy event comprise the eight races which make up the Trainers' Championship meeting, won at Sheffield last year by Charlie Lister.
Make sure to catch all the trainers' views on the shootout via our exclusive preview.
Thurlesbeg Joker, beaten favourite in last year's Scottish Derby final, is on the verge of a first major triumph.
Hugely impressive in winning his semi-final of the Tote Gold Cup at Shelbourne, the Owen McKenna-trained runner is favourite to lift Saturday's final. Sent over by McKenna from the Barrie Draper camp (they did the same with Boherna Best and the Irish Laurels last year), it looks a wise decision judged on the dog's 28.41sec weekend effort.
Crown Rover established himself back at the top end of the six-bend dogs in the country with a runaway win at Sheffield on Sunday in the Queen Mother Cup final.
A defence of his Sunderland Grand Prix title is on the cards, although an open-race extravaganza kicks off at Monmore on Monday and Jimmy Wright will likely aim for that.
Other open race news this week concerns the continued success of Irish trainer Paul Hennessy in the UK. Following the victory in the Golden Jacket at Crayford of his Group Skater, the same dog won his second-round heat of the Henlow Grand Prix on Sunday and joins kennelmate Hello Hippy in Thursday's semis. The Grand Prix is Henlow's first Category One event.
Wimbledon is now a fully-fledged one-sided stadium, although there were teething problems aplenty at Friday's first meeting from the Mick The Miller stand.
"The judges' box is just a partitioned section of the restaurant, there were power problems for some of the facilities and the entrance and exits left something to be desired," said one racegoer.
However, the racing from the 'other side' worked out well and the track is setting its sights on having everything ship-shape for the start of the Derby late next month.
Seamus Cahill, one of the six trainers represented in next week's Betfair Trainers' Championship meeting, is the current leader in the 2010 Trainer of the Year standings.
Cahill is in front of Paul Sallis and reigning champion Mark Wallis. The scores are carried on the Greyhound Trainers' Association website at http://www.greyhoundtrainersassociation.co.uk/gtapoints.html
Newlawn Class is the major mover this week in betting on the Derby, with Pat Buckley's Irish raider now clear best for the £75,000 Classic at Wimbledon at odds of [13.0].
Reports from Ireland have been hugely positive about the dog, who had been recently the subject of a £75,000 bid from the Champagne Club before his unlucky Juvenile Championship defeat.
Latest Derby prices are available here.
