Seamus Cahill's dog was brilliant in the Prestige final and Irish trainer is now set for a another successful year, says Jonathan Hobbs.
Regular readers might have got the message that Hawks Dilemma was destined to be something special - that he hit the big-time with victory in the Prestige was satisfying if a touch frustrating. I fancied Romeo Maldini for my life!
But when the lids went up, and Hawks had flashed out, there was only one winner and Seamus Cahill's dog cruised to success. He was brilliant and has kick-started Cahill's year which promises to be a cracker. The clash of Cahill, Wallis, Lister and company for the Betfair Trainer's Championship is eagerly awaited!
He remains one to keep with, but is pretty exposed now. Lorrys Options, though, might still sneak under the radar. He's a litter brother of the winner and has stamina in abundance. They got away from him at Hall Green, but he was finishing really well and would cope with even more of a test.
Also relishing a test was Kinda Ready, who stepped up in class in style. Mark Wallis will train any amount of open-race winners this year, and had a pretty good night at Hall Green, and this youngster really did look a nice type. To give away so much ground at a track like Hall Green and still come through to win suggests a top-notch dog. Watch his progress.
Miss Lee, another winner on the card, will soon be the country's leading sprinter, if she isn't already! Boasting cracking speed, Dave Pruhs's bitch showed she can work from any trap when winning out of five. Unlucky in the National Sprint, she will be a match for Boherbradda Mac on his return.
Capel Wilson defied Hall Green logic when winning the 670m race. The Birmingham track is among the toughest to run first time the second and four bends (for the six-bend distances) particularly tough, although not as bad as they were.
Dogs tend to swing off, especially wide runners, but Capel Wilson still had enough in the tank to mow down Tipp The Breeze. The latter was admittedly short of recent racecourse action after a lay-off, but has rarely, if ever, been caught in front. It was a cracking run by the winner, who still could be anything.
Iluusionist has been mentioned here before and is in again after a brilliant third behind Mountjoy Ruby and Drink Up Zorro. The aforementioned pair had a brilliant head-to-head, and it's likely most will not have noticed Illusionist in behind. He finished quite close up and is an improver for the Pruhs camp.
Sniper Mo Chara came in for late support for the race won by Butterbridge Ali, and he gave favourite backers a real fright before prevailing. But he showed enough pace to suggest compensation awaits next time. He possesses pretty decent speed for this sort of trip and faster might just have helped.
