The Arc Betting: Plenty to pick from on Tuesday Night
While there's no dispute over what will be the main event at Walthamstow, you won't be disappointed with the undercard. Darrell Williams previews the night's action.
Tuesday's Arc final, the highlight of another red hot Sky Sports show from Walthamstow, looks an absolute belter.
While my ante post pick Mustang Garcia won't feature in the line-up after getting a rough ride in last week's semi-finals, tipping-wise both Milldean Flash and Blonde Jeannie - also put up at the start of the competition - were able to justify my confidence in the two semis. The problem now is trying to split them as both runners have been exemplary in the competition so far and each defend unbeaten runs going into the big showdown.
Early speed was the key ingredient in the preliminary rounds, but both runners showed their mettle in the semi-finals when having to overcome initial problems. Of course, if both break to their best of the ability, it could set up the ultimate in speed battles going into the first bend, which may explain why some layers are not overlooking the possibility of outside runner Centaur Decree being the one to take advantage should the big two take each other on. Milldean Flash will be ideally suited to the inside draw, which probably explains why he is marginal favourite and his Walthamstow record of 16 wins from 33 starts is hard to ignore.
The fact he was able to win his race from just off the pace in the semi final adds another string to his bow, but I still have Blonde Jeannie's Oaks win fresh in my mind, and just have a feeling that John Mullins' amazing bitch might do it again. Unbeaten in four starts at the Stow, she has won 12 of her last 16 starts, and in this competition has again demonstrated an abundance of track craft. Given that she boasts a big race record that simply takes the breath away, she has to be the selection.
The supporting card is full of treats, with the clash of the hurdling big guns, Kildare Lark and Springbok winner Hotdog Jack at 8.35 looking especially exciting.
Both are set to clash in the Grand National next month, but while Hotdog Jack impressed me immensely during the Springbok, I have to be with Kildare Lark on this occasion given his sequence of nine wins from his last ten starts - the only defeat coming when Firm Handed, also in the line-up, picked him up on the line on Juvenile night at Wimbledon. Jason Foster's reigning hurdler of the year also won at the Racing Post Festival over CD and given his trap one draw is likely to prove too tough for his rival.
Whatever Seamus Cahill's fate in those two races, I fancy him to claim a high class Invitation race (8.50) with Milldean Buster. A winner of 7 of his last 11 outings, he bounced back to form at Romford last weekend after a second round exit in the Arc, and while equally speedy Black Ice Boss won't make getting to the front easy, I'd expect the selection to be ahead by the first bend. Elsewhere, I take Aero Blackjack to appreciate the step back up to 640m in the Puppy Stayers at 8.0, while Baran Miami, much improved since switching to eight bends, can topple Genesis Alix in the marathon at 8.15.
