Blue Riband Trophy Betting: Finals night from Hall Green
Darrell Williams marks your card for the evening's racing from Hall Green, live on Sky. There is certainly some great action in store.
Shawfield's loss has been Hall Green's gain. Unbeaten rivals Farloe Reason and Toosey Blue, re-routed from the Scottish Derby, are set to fight out this evening's Blue Riband final, part of an eight race live card on Sky Sports.
Both greyhounds have been faultless to this stage, comfortably getting through last week's very wet conditions in the semi-finals. While I accept that Farloe Reason should be favourite, I am slightly miffed as to why there is such a discrepancy in the betting between Charlie Lister's charge and his John Mullins' trained rival. After all, not only is Toosey Blue the current track record holder for the 480m trip at Hall Green - admittedly Farloe Reason has gone quicker in both heat and semi-final on calculated timings - but Mullins' runner also handed out a four length beating to his rival on Trainers Championship night at Wimbledon. While, given his trap one draw, Farloe Reason could easily build an assailable advantage early on, Toosey Blue is no slouch at the gate either and in reality only has a length to make up on semi-final performances, and given the prices quite simply has to be the selection, even though he would have preferred a trap six draw. Whatever their respective fates tonight, both are likely to play leading roles in the Derby, for which Blue Riband form often works out well.
On the supporting card I rate Genesis Dream (9.10) the best of the night. While Mark Wallis' runner will have to prove her effectiveness around Hall Green, she can hardly be in better form with a brace of all the way winning performances at Walthamstow. It's that early pace that is paramount to her chance with her wider than ideal berth in trap four, but given that she should have too many guns for the opposition early on, she rates a good bet at a bigger price than anticipated.
Drink Up Zorro also looks one to play in the puppy race which kicks the card off at 7.40. Paul Sallis' youngster is best judged on his close second to Pall Mall winner Spears Tarquynn in the heats of that competition last month, and with the benefit of local graded form should get first run.
Grand National winner Kildare Lark only has a neck in hand on runner-up Eye On the Flame ahead of the re-match at 8.15, but while restrictive odds about Jason Foster's make limited appeal, he still rates the most likely winner given his previous form at the Birmingham track.
In the marathon (9.25) Slaneyside Demon has to be taken on at the prices, even though Roy Towner's old timer has hit a purple patch recently with a brace of wins over 930m at Hove. He certainly won't be stopping, but Vatican Iona is worth another chance after a near miss at Wimbledon last week, while Rosshill View also makes some appeal despite her absence since Christmas due to season.
