Dog Tales: Steve Maxwell
Greyhound owner Steve gives us his views on the sport
Describe your role within the greyhound world...
I part own three dogs with three friends. Dogs are with Peter and Paul Rich
How did you get into the sport?
I've always had a casual interest in greyhounds but when one of the guys in the office suggested we get a syndicate together I was first in and then that was me hooked
What has been your proudest moment in the sport?
Tiger Scot winning the 640m Puppy Open on VC Grand Prix Finals night
...and your lowest?
Watching a dog I spent far too much money on come fourth in a Wimbledon A6 - dreams crashed that night
Greyhound racing is better than horseracing because...
It's more affordable to own a greyhound and it's a high octane rush when your dog runs
What are the three most important factors to consider before backing a dog?
1. Does the race have hurdles ? If so avoid betting on the race
2. Draw
3. Where is the early pace...
What must the sport do to attract more investment and interest from Joe Public?
Legislation to increase Bookmakers levy payments.Plan the Category One calendar better to ensure the races do not clash. Then focus on feature events one at a time, each event having big money. People want to see the very best against the very best. This excites the casual watcher and turns some of these into enthusiasts. A steady flow of enthusiastic newcomers will keep reinvigorating the scene
Who is the best trainer around at the moment? And who is the greatest ever?
I don't know about ever, but as for now - Peter & Paul Rich (please can I have a discount on my kennel bill for this!)
Who is your best mate within greyhound racing and why?
Scott Woolford - we wind each other up with dreams of glory!
Which is your favourite-ever dog?
Cherry Pie
Which is your favourite track?
Walthamstow
What one piece of advice would you give someone starting out in the industry?
If you are coming in as an owner treat it as a hobby. Most months your bill will be the same as it would be at a good golf course
Do you ever read the betfair forum?
Yes
And finally give us a tip for next year's Derby
Barnfield On Air - I was there when it broke the 'Stow clock and it looked like it could go faster
