Eight first round heats are being run at Wimbledon today and there are three dogs worth siding with, according to Darrell Williams.

Darrell Williams talks us through his long-term selections for the ST Leger, all of whom are running today and are also worth backing for their individual heats...

The St Leger, the sport's premier staying competiton kicks off with eight first round heats at Wimbledon this evening and with the event looking wide open it might be worth digging a little deeper for some ante post interest. I particularly fancy three dogs, Raving Black ([18.5]), Masterful ([25.0]) and Buffalo Vieri ([29.0]) to belie their odds, and while I'm hoping the winner is amongst them, at those prices they will also serve as good trading options.

I'm also putting those three dogs up as bets for today in their individual heats. Buffalo Vieri (8.18) has drawn a relatively weak heat and looks worth an interest after his excellent 4120 (calc.) trial last weekend. Michael Harris' runner had not previously been round the south west London circuit, but is in good heart after a brace of recent Open wins at Perry Barr and at around [3.0] should be supported.

Masterful really impressed me when beating my third pick Raving Black at Yarmouth on a recent Sky card, and may have been underestimated in the betting, hailing as he does from John Millard's relatively little known range. Having only just stepped up to six bends, he could also be unexposed and with Hurleys Hero in his heat (9.07) I'd be hopeful of getting [3.5], at least.

Raving Black himself, who reached the third round of the Derby, is also worth backing, having won four of his eight six bend races to date, although admittedly he has drawn a tougher heat (8.34) with Eden Dom, as well as more obvious Corrig Vieri both holding claims. However, we should secure [3.0], which makes the operation more than viable.
