"Coventry’s first staging of the Warwickshire Oaks, which begins with four heats tonight, looks as though it will have a solid future given trainers’ enthusiasm in massively over-subscribing the twenty-four runner event."
Darrell Williams tells us who we should keep an eye on tonight as Coventry hosts the Warwickshire Oaks for the first time.
Coventry's first staging of the Warwickshire Oaks, which begins with four heats tonight, looks as though it will have a solid future given trainers' enthusiasm in massively over-subscribing the twenty-four runner event.
The presence of Laurels winner Sunoak Crystal is a big boost and if she is in the same form as when winning at Belle Vue earlier in the week, she will take a lot of beating in her heat at 9.0. A winner of five of her last eight starts, she had also run a close third in the National Oaks final at Nottingham, and with previous experience of Coventry on her card, she should take the beating for Julie Calvert, who has already spoken of the Oaks itself as being her long term target. While I fully rate her chances, should the price be too prohibitive - I'd be looking for [1.6] minimum - it might also be worth keeping an eye on the odds of Droopys Flo, who turned over Was Not Me at Nottingham last month.
Droopys Flo had also been favourite to beat Malarney Lane here a fortnight ago, but Caroline Weatherall's bitch has hit a purple patch over the 480m CD having also scored well the previous week. A finalist in the Puppy Oaks at Sheffield earlier in the year, she looks the one to be with in the 8.0 - ideally at [3.5] or better - where Droopys Parton, an early elimination in the Northern Puppy Derby rates the danger.
Magannellie (8.30) can complete a hat-trick in her heat, which while decent looks a shade less classy than the other three races - I'd be hoping to secure at least 3.5.
Little Jig, who set new figures for Swindon's 509m trip in the Pride Of The West final last week, should have few problems in winning the first heat at 7.30, although don't take less than [1.6].
