It's all mine. Andy Murray shows off the AEGON Championships trophy.
"More important than the tournament win, Murray fans and would-be backers will look at the fact he returned superbly against Andy Roddick in the semis before showing real tenacity and resilience against Tsonga this afternoon."
Andy Murray beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga this afternoon to prove he's got every chance of going all the way at Wimbledon this year.
Andy Murray has sent a chilling message down the spine of his three big Wimbledon rivals by coming from a set down to win the AEGON Championships this afternoon in the rain-delayed final.
The Scot trailed big-serving, all-action Jo Wilfried-Tsonga after being broken just the once in the first set. He was 15-40 down in the second set at 5-5, at which stage he was facing two virtual match points, given the Frenchman was playing so well at the time and very unlikely not to serve out the match. At this point he had drifted to [5.8] on the match odds market, having already touched a high of [7.4] earlier on in the week in the tournament winner market. But Murray saved the first and benefited from some luck on the second with the net cord going his way. He then won the tie-break relatively comfortably and looked the more likelier winner going into the third set, where he needed just the one break of serve to take the match.
More important than the tournament win, Murray fans and would-be backers will look at the fact he returned superbly against Andy Roddick in the semis before showing real tenacity and resilience against Tsonga this afternoon. The Frenchman beat a tired-looking Rafael Nadal ([3.85] for Wimbledon glory) at the quarter-final stage whilst Roger Federer ([3.7])and Novak Djokovic ([4.7])withdrew from Halle and the AEGON Championships respectively with injuries.
The Betfair market doesn't seem to believe anyone outside these four can win Wimbledon with Juan Martin Del Potro next in the betting at [50.0]. Andy Murray is the big mover in the betting over the last week and his display at Queen's has seen him come into [8.0] from [10.0] and there are good reasons to believe that even at that shorter price, he's still the value for his first-ever SW19 win.
