Paul Robinson defied the odds and five challengers in a row to become king of WSO. As we gave him the £100 he so thoroughly deserves, we went out to learn a little bit more about this remarkable tipster.
Paul Robinson has become the first-ever man to win five editions in a row of Winner Stays On and has been rewarded with £100, straight into his betting account, courtesy of Betfair. MikkyMo was the contestant out to stop him in his tracks and deny him the prize at the last hurdle but he was unable to do so. Not only does Paul Robinson win the money, he also stays on and may already be eyeing up a further £100 if he somehow manages to win another five editions.
Last week we looked at different Paul Robinsons and the impact they had made in their respective fields. We decided we wanted to get to know this Paul Robinson a little better and find out more about the man who has made this football tipping competition his own.
Paul, what was the secret to your WSO success?
A combination of things really. Firstly, my knowledge of football. I learnt the game playing at grass roots level and watch games played at very different standards, from the Sunday pub team stuff to the Champions League. In WSO you need to know your J-League as well as you know your Premier League. If you don't you'll be knocked out sooner or later, there's no hiding place in this game. Secondly, my experience of being a relatively successful gambler played its part - from taking my friend's money at cards when we were at school, to having 8-fold Multiples wins on Betfair. Combining these two factors and adding in large slices of luck along the way helped me keep my nose in front of my opponents each week and enabled me to eventually be declared king tipster. The WSO throne is now mine and I don't intend to budge anytime soon.
I'm sure the money will come in handy but it was never about that for you, was it?
Becoming the first man in history to win five in a row and being declared ultimate WSO champ is more important to me than the money as it means that not only am I the best tipster in the district, I'm literally the best in the world at what I do. Money comes and money goes, but accolades of this nature stay with you for a lifetime.
Right. Any plans on what to do with your winnings?
Well Christmas is coming up so I'm sure some of it will go in the party kitty as I've been known to have the old eggnogg from time to time. Just to protect me from the cold, you see. I may also buy a new frock if there's anything left over. It's widely acknowledged that I'm by far the best dressed amongst my group of friends but you have to work a little at maintaining that sort of reputation.
Ok. Well Christmas is an expensive time of year and seeing as you're the man when it comes to tipping, can you give us your best bet for the New Year please, mate. I mean, Your Majesty.
I think you could do worse than back Liverpool for a top 4 finish at around the [7.6] mark. After a shaky start to the season, their form is improving and the manager finally seems to have realised that he needs to play a more attacking game away from Anfield. I'd imagine that there will be at least one or two new signings in January too. Then there's fact that the top four or five sides at present have to play each other in the next month or so, whereas Liverpool have a much easier run of games. So come the New Year, you should be at least able to lay your stake back and have a nice green figure for the rest of the season.
We're currently inviting new contestants to play WSO for a chance to knock Paul Robinson off his perch. For your chance to play, please send us your name, telephone number and the name under which you'd like to play to winnerstayson@betfair.com.Deadline for entering is 6pm on Wednesday 1st December.
