A tip from the Joker to get your betting day under way....

It's quite widely accepted that a little bit of distance is needed to get the best perspective on a culture. The Joker hadn't really thought much about this until a year ago, when an Italian friend of his came to live in England for a year.

He was rarely on time for anything, but quickly became known as 'the operator' in bars and clubs around Brighton. When he left last month, the reputation was gone and all he had in his rucksack were 24 bottles of Spitfire and 10 packets of pork scratchings.

He phoned the Joker last week. 'Bloody Italians,' he said, 'late for everything, never get anything done when they do turn up, and only care about their appearance. I can't stand it.'

He'll be back, just like the Italian U21s will be for the semi-finals of Sweden 2009, if they at least draw their match with Belarus U21s this evening. With important players like Sebastian Giovinco hitting form at the right time, they can do better than just a point against a team that lost 5-1 to Sweden.
