John Isner might need to wipe the sleep from his eyes this afternoon
"Fatigue is the only reason why Isner is [3.85] to beat Thiemmo De Bakker [1.13]."
Despite putting in the overtime, John Isner was unable to get the day off and returns to Wimbledon to play a young Dutchman this afternoon. Should we back him?
Ever work late and, leaving in the knowledge that you have to be back at work less than 12 hours later, question the point of going home? If so, John Isner knows your pain.
The big serving American probably didn't have to travel home on the tube amongst drunk people after winning the longest match in tennis history yesterday and when he got there he probably didn't end up watching News 24 with a lukewarm lasagne. However, when he returns to Wimbledon today, less than 24 hours after his 70-68 final set victory, Isner will surely be... knackered.
That's why he's as long as [2.26] to beat Thiemmo De Bakker [1.79]. Fatigue is the only reason that the market fancies the Dutchman ahead of the American as De Bakker is ranked 24 places below Isner and has only played at Wimbledon once before, losing in the first round.
It should also be noted that he too played an epic first round match. Sure, it didn't exceed three days but his five set battle with Santiago Giraldo lasted for over four hours and included a 16-14 final set. So it's unlikely that De Bakker will be feeling too fresh either.
So should we expect another long haul contest today? Perhaps not. We can get [2.82] on three in the total sets market, [2.54] and [3.45] on five. It's hard to say how the two players, especially Isner, will approach this match. I expect De Bakker will try to take advantage of any tiredness early on so I can imagine him taking the first set.
However, Isner is the better player, his fourth and third round appearances at Melbourne and Roland Garros respectively were career bests. By his own standards, he is having a decent season so back him to win and have a punt on four sets at [2.54].
Recommended bets:
Back John Isner @ [3.85]
Back four sets @ [1.13].
