Jurgen Melzer reached the semi-finals of the French Open and is on a golden run
"Melzer has won eight of his last nine five set matches, has won six of his last seven at Grand Slam level and has won six in a row when priced as favourite."
Ben Caudell makes the picks on the third day of Wimbledon...
Viktor Troicki (SRB) v Jurgen Melzer (AUT)
Surprisingly, French Open semi-finalist Jurgen Melzer has only ever been as far as the third round at Wimbledon. The 29-year-old, in my opinion, has the perfect game for the grass courts, however his results at the All England club don't back this up. He is one of a handful of players left on the circuit who, given the chance, rushes the net as frequently as possible. He is also one of the few players to serve and volley whatever the surface plus he has the advantage of being a left-hander, giving him a slice serve out wide to the backhand being a serious weapon where cheap points can easily be won.
The Austrian veteran has recorded undoubtedly the best results of his career this year and is riding on a crest of a wave. He will be reluctant for that run to be halted any time soon. Ranked at a career high of 16 in the ATP World Rankings, Melzer has recorded accomplished wins over the likes of Fernando Verdasco, David Ferrer, Novak Djokovic and Marin Cilic to name just a few. His stats are also worth taking note of - Melzer has won eight of his last nine five set matches, has won six of his last seven at Grand Slam level and has won six in a row when priced as favourite.
Troicki often relies on his serve as his main weapon and will struggle to get to grips with the Austrian's chip-and-charge game and slice serve on the faster lower bouncing grass courts. Melzer has a 3-0 head-to-head lead over the Serbian and all three matches were played on indoor hard courts. I can see this being fought over possibly four sets with Melzer the eventual winner.
Selection: Back Jurgen Melzer @ [1.52] to win match
Back Melzer 3-1 @ [4.4]
Vera Dushevina (RUS) v Tsvetana Pironkova (BUL)
Get on Dushevina to defeat one of my favourite female tennis players, Tsvetana Pironkova today.
Dushevina was in outstanding form against French Open winner Francesca Schiavone on Monday and is 7-3 on the grass and leads the head-to-head series 1-0. Pironkova has struggled to adapt her game style to the faster court surfaces, especially the grass, her serve is weak so expect Dushevina to power herself into the next round.
