Wimbledon Daily Tips: Latter stages beckon for consistent Spaniard

David Ferrer may be a clay court specialist but he looks set to last into the second week of Wimbledon

"I’ve always been surprised that Ferrer hasn’t done better at Wimbledon over the years given his athleticism and consistent hitting ability."

Sean Calvert makes the picks on the middle weekend and he sees the end of the line for an up and down Frenchman

Other than the bizarre retirement involving Victor Hanescu out on Court 18, it was fairly quiet at Wimbledon yesterday with none of the excitement of the previous couple of days.

Jurgen Melzer did the business as expected yesterday, although he wrapped things up just short of the predicted total games margin of over 40.5, which was disappointing.

On the face of it, today's matches all look pretty one-sided with the remaining men's third round matches appearing solid for favourite backers.

Andy Murray, Rafa Nadal and Robin Soderling are impossible to oppose, but even a treble on those three would only pay around [1.25], so it's pretty slim pickings on the show courts today.

It's hard to see any value in the outright odds on the men's coupon today, but I do like the look of David Ferrer to beat Jeremy Chardy in four sets at [3.85].

I've always been surprised that Ferrer hasn't done better at Wimbledon over the years given his athleticism and consistent hitting ability.

The Spaniard has only reached the fourth round once in his career, but he's been in great form in 2010, posting a 37-11 winning mark and he has won a tournament on grass in S'Hertogenbosch in 2008.

Chardy, on the other hand, often flatters to deceive and should be better than he is on grass with that big serve and powerful groundies, but his radar is often out of sync and over five sets his lack of consistency lets him down.

He has only once been past the third round in a Slam (4th round at Roland Garros in 2008) and although he's likely to take a set off Ferrer, that run is unlikely to end today, as the Spaniard will grind him down and force Chardy into too many errors.

There are also quite a few strong favourites in the women's third round today, with Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova on display at prohibitive odds along with many other short priced favourites.

This is WTA though and the one I'm taking on today has to be Agnieska Radwanska at the shocking price of [1.27] to beat Sara Errani.

Radwanska hasn't been past the third round of any tournament since Miami in March and interestingly, she has been beaten at a price of [1.4] or shorter in five of her last six events.

The number seven seed also lost in the first round at Eastbourne and comes into this low on confidence against a player who has beaten her before.

Radwanska should have enough to come through this, but I will be laying the [1.75] about the Pole winning in straight sets against an opponent who has had a good preparation for Wimbledon and is at a career high in the rankings.

Recommended bets:
Back David Ferrer to beat Jeremy Chardy 3-1 at [3.85]
Lay Agnieska Radwanska to beat Sara Errani 2-0 at [1.75]
