Roger Federer came very, very close to Wimbledon defeat this afternoon
"Federer, who briefly ceded title favouritism to Rafa Nadal during the game, drifted from the minimum odds of [1.01] to [3.8] when two sets down and facing three break points at 4-4 in the third. "
Roger Federer is taken to the brink as a routine first round engagement nearly goes very wrong
Alejandro Falla started his Wimbledon first round match against Roger Federer as a [100.0] underdog on Betfair, while punters were willing to risk £100 to win £1 on the reigning champion.
But at two stages during the match, Federer looked more the apprentice than the master - and the Betfair in-running betting reflected this.
Federer, who briefly ceded title favouritism to Rafa Nadal during the game, drifted from the minimum odds of [1.01] to [3.8] when two sets down and facing three break points at 4-4 in the third.
And when 5-3 down in the fourth set, he drifted out to over [5.0] on Betfair to win the match.
But Falla, backed from [100.0] to [1.22] to win the match when up 5-3 in the fourth, could not close the deal and Federer took the decider 6-0.
Betfair spokesman Tony Calvin commented: "We were just one held serve away from one of the biggest betting upsets of all time.
"It would have been the betting equivalent of England losing 3-1 against Wales at Wembley, which of course they may do if carrying on their current World Cup form into Euro 2012 qualifying..."
Federer is [2.6] to win Wimbledon from [3.6] Rafa Nadal. Andy Murray is the [11.0] third favourite.
