Will Andy follow up with victory in London?
"It's been an exhilirating morning and a terrific week - one that has reminded tennis punters that they should never, ever write off Andy Murray."
Andy beats the odds to pull off excellent Masters Series win in Shanghai. Now it's bring on London for the world number three...
Andy Murray defied the doubters - and there have been plenty this week, not least on this site - as he gave a stunning performance in the final of the Shanghai Masters to beat Roger Federer 6-3, 6-2.
Ben Caudell, who tipped up Murray to beat the world number three in the final, had called the Scot's semi-final performance against Juan Monaco "imperious." That was the appropriate adjective again as Murray took just one hour and 25 minutes to dispatch the greatest player the game has ever seen.
This has been an excellent week for Andy, who was backed at [9.6] in the tournament winner market, and he has finally moved on from his traumatic, ignominious exit from the US Open.
Federer found him unplayable - from the moment Murray broke his serve in the opening game, he could provide no answer to Andy's combination of never-say-die defence and aggressive, attacking play.
This is only Murray's second title of an up and down season, which started so well, with an appearance in the Australian Open final and trailed off with humblings at Wimbledon and Flushing Meadows. However, his performance in Shanghai showed that he is back at the top of his game and he will desperate to round off his year in style at the ATP World Tour finals in London next month.
It's been an exhilirating morning and a terrific week - one that has again reminded tennis punters that they should never, ever write off Andy Murray.
