Shocker in Melbourne as injury-hit Nadal is dumped out of the tournament by fellow Spaniard David Ferrer
The Australian Open witnessed a shock today as Rafael Nadal was dumped out of the tournament in straight sets by compatriot David Ferrer.
The tournament's top seed had been backed at [1.12] to win the match and [2.42] to lift the trophy in the final, but called for a medical timeout in the first set and was not able to perform at his usual level.
A straight sets win for Ferrer was barely considered possible by Betfair layers who offered quotes of [85.0] for that eventuality.
Defeat for Nadal brings a shake-up in the winner market with Roger Federer the new favourite at [2.44] with Andy Murray - Ferrer's semi-final opponent - second in the betting at [3.2].
Novak Djokovic faces Federer in the other semi and can be backed at [5.6] to get past the no.2 seed and win the tournament.
Despite beating Nadal, punters aren't rushing to back Ferrer - he's the [13.0] tournament outsider.
