Roger Federer was at his very best against Lleyton Hewitt

"With this match being a day-time match and the fact that it is the best of five sets, it is hard to oppose the Fed Express."

Nikolay Davydenko is the in-form man of the ATP Tour but he's not playing just anyone in the quarter-finals tonight, he's playing Roger Federer. And that should mean the end of the Russian's good run, says Ben Caudell.

Roger Federer the multi Grand Slam winner and greatest tennis player of all time will today face Nikolay Davydenko, the most in-form player coming into this tournament and winner of the last two matches these two have played.

Against Lleyton Hewitt in the fourth round, Federer displayed some of the best tennis seen at this year's Australian Open. He was formidable in all aspects of the game, hitting hardly any unforced errors, comfortable on serve and constantly putting the Australian under pressure and giving away few points, rarely allowing Hewitt to find any kind of rhythm to get back into the match.

As with all of Federer's matches, there is always a high level of expectation, The Swiss master has an astonishing record in Grand Slam matches, amazingly reaching the finals in eighteen of the last nineteen!!! At the Australian Open Federer has been defeated only three times since 2003, he has three Titles (2004,2006,2007)and has dropped only a single set so far at this year's Open, against Igor Andreev. Federer's opponent today, Nikolay Davydenko, doesn't seem to be fazed by the prospect of facing him, having won the last two matches between the pair and completing a magnificent end to the 2009 season winning the World Tour Finals in London. There he recorded wins over Juan Martin Del Potro, Roger Federer, Robin Soderling and Rafael Nadal and Davydenko will be full of confidence and raring to go for the third time in two months.

The last time the pair met was on the hard-courts of Doha; Davydenko seems to play better when the sun has gone down and the cooler climate settles in for the night, he was at his very best during his 6-4 6-4 evening win over Federer and registered a statistic which I have never witnessed before!! He managed to hit 27 out of 27 first serves in court meaning he didn't hit a single second serve throughout the duration of the first set. With this match being a day-time match and the fact that it is the best of five sets, it is hard to oppose the Fed Express.Davydenko has always struggled in five set matches, although he did succeed against Fernando Verdasco in five in the previous round. One last stat: the Russian has won a paltry set against Federer in four previous Grand Slam matches.

Selection:

Back Roger Federer @[ 1.4] to win the match

Reasonable analysis but only tomorrow will tell whether you're right or not. BTW, it is PALTRY not "poultry" unless you were suggesting that Davydenko is chicken when it comes to playing Fed - recent history suggests otherwise.
