The 'help' was ready as ever to make sure Gentleman JD didn't go thirsty

"So the Gentleman JD is a gentleman when it suits him and a run-of-the-mill mouthy reprobate when it doesn’t. A bit like the Australian cricket team then."

Read on to find out why this week's contestants are both as bad as each other in a special FA Cup edition of Winner Stays On.

Gentleman JD stayed on last week courtesy of Southampton's very, very late fourth goal which was enough to ensure his back of over 3.5 goals in the match just pipped his opponent's selection of Southampton to be leading at half-time and winning at full-time.

As ever, here at Betfair Towers we were intrigued to find out a little more about WSO's reigning champ so we went in search of the Gentleman and met him on his country estate in deep Dorset. We found him relaxing on a velvet-covered sofa by an open log fire, eating foie gras sandwiches washed down with endless glasses of fine port and complaining that the 'help' wasn't of the standard that it used to be and adding that "minimum wage is a fair wage" .

But we were here to talk WSO.

"It was an honest contest last week between two honourable players who played the game in the right spirit. I emerged victorious on this occasion but it could have gone either way and I've already thrown down my glove at my next opponent which as tradition says, means I've challenged him to a duel."

We reminded him that last week when hearing he was up against New Pair Of Balls he had warned his opponent he'd "require a new pair" after the Gentleman was done with him.

"As ever my words were taken out of context" was his reply.

So the Gentleman JD is a gentleman when it suits him and a run-of-the-mill mouthy reprobate when it doesn't. A bit like the Australian cricket team then.

If it's tradition and history that he likes then the Gentleman should do well again this week in a special FA Cup edition of WSO. He's up against Dangerous Dave who is so confident he's going to win that he suggested we "might as well send him next week's matches as well", so sure was he of progressing. We here in the Board Room of Winner Stays On Ltd don't like to be anything other than impartial and polite concerning our contestants but for what it's worth, we sincerely hope the gluttonous aristocrat and the cocky chicken-counting new boy each have three losing bets and go out together. So to speak.
