"In 2009, despite an upturn in fortune under Fabio Capello, England couldn’t compete with a nation that they once viewed as equals."
Michael Lintorn looks back at the last five encounters between England and Spain, where even though goals have been in short supply, there has been plenty to talk about...
England 0-0 Spain (Euro 1996 quarter-final)
This one still remains fresh in most England fans memories, having marked their only ever penalty shootout success, with Stuart Pearce among the four successful takers to lay to rest the memory of his World Cup 1990 miss. David Seaman saved from Rafael Nadal's uncle Miguel to seal a spot in the semis, where normal service was resumed.
England 3-0 Spain (2001 friendly)
It is widely forgotten how miserably England were faring before Sven-Goran Eriksson arrived, winless in five and facing an uphill task to qualify for the World Cup, and how quickly he changed things. This Villa Park friendly was his first game, complete with unlikely starters (Chris Powell) and scorers (Nick Barmby, Emile Heskey and Ugo Ehiogu).
Spain 1-0 England (2004 friendly)
Future Chelsea left back Asier del Horno got the only goal in this ill-tempered collision in Madrid but the match was more memorable for an impetuous display by a 19-year-old Wayne Rooney, who was subbed after 42 minutes to save him being sent off, and the racial abuse suffered by Ashley Cole and Shaun Wright-Phillips.
England 0-1 Spain (2007 friendly)
The Three Lions' last home game "on tour" before the new Wembley opened was a turning point for both, kicking off a miserable year for Steve McClaren and starting Spain's shift from underachievers to European and world champions. Fittingly, the winner came from substitute Andres Iniesta, his first ever international strike.
Spain 2-0 England (2009 friendly)
At least with the above Old Trafford loss, England could almost take solace from the fact that they had underperformed. Two years on, despite an upturn in fortune under Fabio Capello, they couldn't compete with a country that they once viewed as equals. David Villa and Fernando Llorente got the goals on a chastening night in Sevilla.
Will Spain maintain their recent winning streak? They are [1.92] to triumph...
