Rafael Nadal has massively improved his serve in recent times
Rain delays mean tennis fans are in for a special treat on Monday when the US Open final finally gets underway and our columnist can only see one man winning
Rafael Nadal (ESP) v Novak Djokovic (SRB)
Novak Djokovic saved two match points on his way to recording a spectacular semi-final win over Roger Federer to make it through to his second New York final where he will face Rafael Nadal.
World no.1 Nadal cruised through to his first US Open final with a 6-2 6-3 6-4 win over Mikhail Youzhny and is vying to become only the seventh man to complete the set of all four Grand Slam crowns. The Majorcan native comes into tonight's showdown with an impeccable Grand Slam record having already won the French Open and Wimbledon titles this year and has won 20 in a row at this level. Nadal is yet to drop a set in Flushing Meadows and has won the last five finals he has played.
Nadal leads the head-to-head series 14-7 however Djokovic has won the last three encounters two of which were played on indoor and one on outdoor hard. He has won 8 in a row in 5 set matches, six in a row in the United States and four in a row in finals. It is important to note however that the Serbian has lost four of the last five against left handers and four of the last five against top 10 players.
The Spanish Bull will win this match if he serves as well as he has done so far at this tournament with his new bullet-proof service game, he will be well aware that Djokovic is probably physically spent after his almost four hour five set epic against Federer so will therefore focus his game on hitting a higher percentage of his strokes closer to the tram lines trying to manoeuvre the Serb out of position.
Nadal is totally focused on winning the one trophy that is missing from his cabinet and I believe will try to bully Novak into submission from the back of the court. I can see the Serbian winning at least one set, possibly the first, before being out played with the more consistent Spaniard triumphing.
Selection:
Back Rafael Nadal @ [1.4] to win match
Back Nadal 3-1 @ [4.0]
