Tomas Berdych has been completely out of form since his French Open and Wimbledon exploits
"If Garcia Lopez serves as well as he has done all week and if Berdych looks to be struggling with his stomach then this match will turn into a straightforward win for Garcia Lopez, so get on the Spaniard at a large 3.40 in the match odds."
Ben Caudell previews Tomas Berdych's third round clash with the in-form Guillermo Garcia-Lopez....
Tomas Berdych (CZE) v Guillermo Garcia Lopez (ESP)
Both Berdych and Garcia Lopez can count themselves lucky to have made it through to the third round here in Shanghai.
Seventh seed Berdych laid it all on the line in a bid to add valuable points to his Barclays ATP World Tour Finals qualification campaign, overcoming an upset stomach to dispatch of Tommy Robredo 6-0, 6-4 in quick fashion.
Although the Czech no.1 covered up the stomach problem miraculously in the first set, it became apparent in the second that he was in pain. After the match Berdych was quoted as saying "I've been struggling with some stomach problems for two days; I've eaten almost nothing in the past two days and was feeling pretty weak. I tried to play more aggressively and not have such long rallies. Somehow it worked and I'm extremely happy for today."
Guillermo Garcia Lopez can be said to be a little more fortunate than his opponent; down a set and a break of serve against the resurgent Andy Roddick, who is also vying for a place in the World Tour Finale at the end of the season. The American pulled a muscle in his leg and was unable to continue, allowing the Spaniard to progress into the third round.
Berdych will find himself fighting a losing battle if there are few signs of his illness getting any better; the Czech is going to be up against one of the most in-form players on Tour, boasting a recent win against world number one Rafael Nadal and an impressive 9-1 record in all matches. Although Berdych swept past Tommy Robredo relatively easily, his form has been dire by his own standards since his Wimbledon and French Open exploits. The 25 year old's stats read 3-7 in all matches including a 1st rd loss against Michael Berrer at the Beijing Open, played last week.
The head-to-head between these two stands at a win apiece, with both matches taking place on the clay courts. If Garcia Lopez serves as well as he has done all week and if Berdych looks to be struggling with his stomach then this match will turn into a straightforward win for Garcia Lopez, so get on the Spaniard at a large [3.40] in the match odds.
