Alex Dolgopolov saves his best performances for the big stages

"Although a lot of the hype surrounds the Frenchman in this match, I believe that this game is evenly poised and could go either way, meaning there is definite value in backing Dolgopolov pre-match at a tasty [2.4] in the match odds."

Fresh from correctly predicting Philippe Kohlschreiber's demise at the hands of Andy Roddick, Ben Caudell tells us why exciting prospect Alexandr Dolgopolov should get the better of Jeremy Chardy.

Jeremy Chardy (FRA) v Alexandr Dolgopolov (UKR)

One of the most eye-catching 1st Rd upsets so far at this year's Shanghai Masters came from the unquestionably talented youngster Alexandr Dolgopolov. The Ukrainian fought back from a break down in the third set to record a strong-willed victory over the 16th seed Nicolas Almagro (2-6, 7-5, 7-6) to set himself up for an intriguing encounter against the powerful Jeremy Chardy of France.

23 year-old former Junior Wimbledon Champion Chardy has been in impressive form of late, having already competed in three matches at this year's event , two qualifying games and a 1st Rd win over the dangerous Marcos Baghdatis. There's no doubting the Frenchman's ambitions as he steps out on court against a player he has 1-0 losing head-to-head against. Chardy has won four of his last five matches in Asia and on hard-courts and is currently 7-3 in all contests.

Although a lot of the hype surrounds the Frenchman in this match, I believe that this game is evenly poised and could go either way, meaning there is definite value in backing Dolgopolov pre-match at a tasty [2.4] in the match odds. However beware, as with all of Dolgopolov's match-ups, this price will no doubt change before the off so get on early!

Dolgopolov has a knack of going to three sets, in-fact he has played eight three-setters in his last twelve matches, winning only three. His style of play is more suited against the bigger hitters and he often struggles against the grinders from the back of the court, partly due to his lack of patience. The Ukrainian often raises his game when playing as the underdog - he has won four of his last five matches as the underdog including recent wins over Nicolas Almagro, Marcos Baghdatis, and Mikhail Youzhny - all played on outdoor hard courts.

My money will be on Dolgopolov, a player who holds so much promise and ability, is ranked higher than his opponent and who enjoys showcasing his talents on the big stage.

Selection:

Back Alexandr Dolgopolov @ [2.4] to win match
Back Over 23.5 Games @ approx [2.0]
