Novak Djokovic has a much better record in Rome than Fernando Verdasco and should make the semis at the Spaniard's expense
"With the courts being slightly faster than in Monte Carlo and the fact that Novak Djokovic will have the fresher legs, I believe the “Serbinator” will increase his head-to-head series lead to 6-4 over Verdasco."
Ben Caudell looks ahead to today's quarter-final between Novak Djokovic and Fernando Verdasco, two players who are used to seeing each other on court in recent times....
Novak Djokovic will have a little twinkle in eye when he finds out he is facing Fernando Verdasco yet again, for it will be the third time this year (and second time this month) the pair have had to face off against one another.
Verdasco, who seems to be on one almighty run of form at the moment will be aware of Novak Djkovic's appetite for revenge. The Spaniard steamrolled the Serb in the semi finals of the Monte Carlo Series 1000 event, cruising to a 6-2 6-2 victory.
Djokovic found it hard to cope with Verdasco's heavy angled topspin forehand that had him moving all over the court; though the fact that Djokovic wasn't feeling 100% that day may give the Serb a little more optimism coming into today's match.
The fact that he's had a week's rest, whereas Verdasco had to grind his way through a well deserved tournament win in Barcelona gives him, I believe, a slight advantage.
The left handed Spaniard has played an impressive eighteen matches since the start of March, twelve of which have been played on the more punishing clay courts. He is currently 9-1 in all matches and 6-4 in Rome; however he has never been past the quarter finals. Djokovic's record in Rome is a lot more impressive; he lost in the final to Rafael Nadal in last year's event and the year before this defeated Stanislas Wawrinka in the final to be crowned 2008 champion.
With the courts being slightly faster than in Monte Carlo and the fact that Novak Djokovic will have the fresher legs, I believe the "Serbinator" will increase his head-to-head series lead to 6-4 over Verdasco. "There's nothing sweeter than revenge"
