Jo-Wilfried Tsonga canm beat Novak Djokovic if he stays focussed and on his game for long enough

"New world number ones have a poor record in their first tournament after gaining the top ranking for the first time and I have a feeling that Tsonga, with the ‘home’ crowd 100 percent behind him, could spring a shock in the early hours of Sunday morning. He needs to be at his peak though."

Two bets from our Sean today as his big-priced outright tip Mardy Fish looks to make the final and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga seeks revenge against Novak Djokovic after that Wimbledon semi-final defeat.

It was a mixed day on Friday at the Rogers Cup, with one winning bet and one losing one, but the good news is that Mardy Fish is rolling on and has proved to be a great investment as an outright bet.

The American is down to [8.0] for the title in Montreal from an opening [65.0] and faces Janko Tipsarevic tonight for a place in the final.

Tipsy is there thanks in part to a brainless effort from Tomas Berdych, whose answer to the blustery conditions was inexplicably to belt the ball harder.

Speaking of brainless, it was arguably even more so from Gael Monfils, who played from so far back behind the baseline against Novak Djokovic in their quarter final that he may as well have been outside the Uniprix Stadium.

The Frenchman was limited to a couple of crowd pleasing winners and a heavy defeat that was well deserved.

Djokovic was great last night, but he will face a totally different foe in Jo-Wilfried Tsonga tonight, as the big man will be in his face, trying to inflict his sixth defeat upon the Serbian with bruising aggressive tactics.

Granted, most of those wins were against a pre-gluten-free Djokovic, but if Tsonga plays at his best, he will win this match - it's a question of how long can he stay in top gear for?

The Frenchman has shown a great attitude this week to go with his increased confidence and I think he's well worth a bet at around [5.3] to beat the in-form Wimbledon 2011 winner.

New world number ones have a poor record in their first tournament after gaining the top ranking for the first time and I have a feeling that Tsonga, with the 'home' crowd 100 percent behind him, could spring a shock in the early hours of Sunday morning. He needs to be at his peak though.

But first up it's Fish v Tipsarevic and to illustrate what a frustrating performer Tipsy is, his win over Berdych means he'll be in the world's top-20 on Monday and he's still never won a tour level title, which is very odd indeed.

He's hardly likely to break his duck in a Masters 1000 event and despite being wobbly on serve in a bizarre match against Stan Wawrinka yesterday that featured 15 breaks of serve in 28 games played, Fish should come through.

The American won't be as accommodating as Berdych was and he has beaten Tipsy three times from their four meetings.

Fish is in better form now than when those meetings took place and for all his bluster and showmanship, I can see the Serbian wilting under the pressure, as he did in the Davis Cup Final last year when Monfils hammered him.

Fish will need to up his game on serve and if he does, the [1.69] about a Fish win might look like value very quickly.

Recommended bets:

Back Fish to beat Tipsarevic at [1.69]
Back Tsonga to beat Djokovic at [5.3]
