Ok, not that Plan B. But a Betfair Multiple is Sean's chosen strategy to get back to winning ways.
"The rain in Montreal on Tuesday has delayed matters somewhat and
changed the schedule for Wednesday and as I’ve taken a hit in the
first two days, I reckon a crafty Betfair Multiple will pull things round."
Things haven't gone quite as Sean Calvert would have hoped so far and that includes an early exit for Andy Murray, his outright tip. So it's Plan B for Sean and a Multiple today to try and get us back on track.
The 2011 Rogers Cup has begun in the worst possible fashion for this column, as both my main outright tip and yesterday's singles wager were taken out in straight sets.
Andy Murray suffered a nightmare performance against Kevin Anderson, while Sergiy Stakhovsky chose Tuesday to begin his season - somewhat belatedly to say the least - in the process taking out our pick Philipp Kohlschreiber.
But wait. It's not all doom and gloom. Backers of my longshot Mardy Fish at the advised [65.0] are holding some pretty good cards right now, as Murray's exit means that the American is down to [30.0] in the outright.
There were several more surprise results to go with the aforementioned couple on Tuesday, and the suggestion is that the balls are much heavier in Montreal this year, creating faster conditions.
A quick look at some of the results in the opening days backs this up, with the likes of Michael Llodra, Ivo Karlovic, Anderson, Stakhovsky, and Phillip Petzschner scoring unexpected wins early on.
The rain in Montreal on Tuesday has delayed matters somewhat and changed the schedule for Wednesday and as I've taken a hit in the first two days, I reckon a crafty Betfair Multiple will pull things round.
Stan Wawrinka was impressive in his first round dismissal of David Nalbandian and today's opponent, Michael Russell doesn't have the weapons to match the Swiss.
Wawrinka has only lost to Rafa Nadal, Andy Murray and Roger Federer in Canada in the last three years and with Murray out, he'll be looking to progress in that section of the draw. He should ease through this, as he did in the pair's only previous meeting in Chennai last year.
Richard Gasquet was too classy for Thomaz Bellucci on the Brazilian's favoured clay-courts at Roland Garros in June and a re-match here on quick hard-courts should suit the Gasman just fine.
Bellucci laboured to a win over Andrey Golubev in round one (making it 18 Tour level losses in a row for Golubev, who is closing in on Vinny Spadea's all-time record) and lost to the struggling Marcos Baghdatis in Washington last week. This one should go Gasquet's way.
Finally, Juan Martin Del Potro and Marin Cilic face off on BN Court at around 10pm for their delayed match and the Argentine will be desperate to erase the memory of last week's loss to Ernests Gulbis in LA with a win here.
He's 3-1 ahead in their career meetings so far and despite Cilic showing a slight improvement lately on a pretty poor 2011 thus far, Delpo looked in ominous form against Jarkko Nieminen in round one, banging down 13 aces in a one-sided win.
Cilic had much more of a struggle against Andreas Seppi and didn't post great numbers on serve, allowing the Italian to break him twice.
Conditions will suit both players, but Delpo is the more consistent and should go through to set up a likely clash with Djokovic in round three.
Recommended bet:
Back Wawrinka [1.32], Gasquet [1.25], and Del Potro [1.41] in a Betfair Multiple
