Kohlschreiber is one of the best volleyers in the game

"Kohlschreiber’s spell with Maclagan was a brief and unspectacular one,
but at least he’s in far better form than today’s opponent, Stakhovsky."

It was a frustrating opening day for Sean Calvert but Philipp Kohlschreiber should get us back to winning ways against an opponent who is completely out of form at present.

Yesterday's two hours and 34 minutes sat in front of Ivo Karlovic v Juan Monaco at the Rogers Cup proved to be a sizable chunk of my life that I'll never get back, as the Argentine lost in a most annoying fashion.

Monaco took the first set before going on to lose a final set breaker to down our first bet of the week. But there's more opening round action on Tuesday, plus our first look at Andy Murray, who takes on Kevin Anderson and should win with something to spare.

Today I'm focussing on the first round clash between Philipp Kohlschreiber and Sergiy Stakhovsky, which takes place at around 17:00 UK time on Court 9 at the Uniprix Stadium.

The German remains a frustrating talent capable of beating the best, as his 17 wins over top-10 opponents illustrate, but he's been unable to produce consistently, which has led to a split with former coach Miles Maclagan.

Kohlschreiber's spell with Maclagan was a brief and unspectacular one, but at least he's in far better form than today's opponent, Stakhovsky.

The Ukranian has won just three matches since the French Open - and one of those was against Britain's world number 318, Daniel Cox.

Stakhovsky's two other wins in that time were against world number 131, Jaroslav Pospisil and Maximo Gonzalez, the world number 92.

You have to go back as far as February to find Stakhovsky's last hard-court win over a top-50 player, when he defeated Ernests Gulbis in Dubai, and a look at the players he's lost to lately should concern the Ukrainian's fans.

Olivier Rochus, Federico Delbonis, Jan Hernych and Rainer Schuettler have all beaten him recently and Kohlschreiber should add to Stakhovsky's recent malaise.

The German reached the quarter finals in Canada last year, where he lost a tight one to Nadal and anything approaching that sort of form would make Kohlschreiber a great bet at around [1.60] in this first meeting between the pair.

Recommended bet:

Back Kohlschreiber at [1.60] to beat Stakhovsky
