Gael Monfils is an ultimate showman but not an ultimate winner

"I believe that Murray’s defensive and tenacious qualities will outlast Monfils, who has reached his limit in terms of energy levels. The head-to-head series between these two is an important factor when considering a winner here, Murray leads this 4-1 with their only indoor hard court meeting going the way of the Scot."

Ben Caudell on why the battered and bruised Gael Monfils has completed his last escape act of the week and will find Andy Murray a little too hot to handle.

Andy Murray (GBR) v Gael Monfils (FRA)

Both players came through their second dramatic three set matches of the week to reach the quarter-final stage at the Paris Masters yesterday. Andy Murray moved into the last eight with a hard fought victory over Croatian Marin Cilic (7-6, 3-6, 6-3) in just over two hours whilst the circus act that is Gael Monfils took nearly three hours to end Fernando Verdasco's World Tour Finals qualifying campaign, defeating the Spaniard 6-7 7-6 7-5.

Despite the fatigue and pain in the knee that Monfils is so keen to discuss before each match the Frenchman plays, he still manages to find other resources to give him that spark to carry on and fight. That spark, so necessary for Monfils to continue his efforts, is generated by the Parisian crowd and his family, who have watched each of his close fought encounters.

There is however one spectator who would prefer Monfils to no longer take so many risks on court. That man is Guy Forget, the Davis Cup captain who will want Monfils, his No.1 player, to be fully fit for the final that takes place in three weeks time.

Andy Murray has less to worry about and will come into this match the fitter of the two, having had more time to prepare for this week's tournament after his early loss to Juan Monaco in Valencia. The young Scot is starting to adapt his game better to the faster indoor surface with each match he plays. He also has the ability to mix his game up by serving and volleying, a tactic that has been extremely effective thus far.

I believe that Murray's defensive and tenacious qualities will outlast Monfils, who has reached his limit in terms of energy levels. The head-to-head series between these two is an important factor when considering a winner here, Murray leads this 4-1 with their only indoor hard court meeting going the way of the Scot (6-2 6-2), albeit a match played two years ago in Madrid. Murray is a better player now and I think will outlast him under the difficult playing conditions contrived by the Parisian crowd. I therefore suggest that we get behind the O2- bound Murray and back him to win a close fought encounter in three sets once again.

Back Andy Murray to win match at [1.43]
Back Murray 2-1 @ [4.3]
