"This will be a tough match for the Argentine but with the slightly better form and pedigree on clay, I believe Juan Monaco will scrape through this one."

Ben Caudell looks at the action on day one in the Monte Carlo Masters in Monaco where today's bet of the day is none other than... Juan Monaco.

We kick start the clay court season tips today with two well-known players who are accustomed to the red European dirt. The more experienced of the two, Juan Monaco from Argentina, will be relishing the prospect of playing Rafael Nadal in the third round if all goes to plan for both players.

Firstly and foremost he will have to overcome Jarkko Nieminen, a player he has a 2-0 losing head-to-head record against (neither on clay) and a man who is on a mission to move back up in the world rankings - he currently lies at number 68. 2009 proved to be a difficult year for the Finnish number one, who missed more than three months of the season with a wrist injury, causing him to drop to 120 in the rankings and having to play on the Challenger Circuit on his return.

Monaco will be well aware of the capabilities that Nieminen possesses on the clay and will show him the respect that he deserves. The Finn has already shown decent form on the clay this year, having won a challenger tournament in Marrakech, reached the quarter finals in Barletta and most recently the last 16 in Casablanca, having had to qualify.

Monaco has also started the 2010 season well, playing three clay court tournaments in preparation for Monte Carlo which resulted in two semi final appearances (Buenos Aires and Acapulco) with both losses to Juan Carlos Ferrero. He also managed to reach the final of Santiago, before losing to Thomaz Bellucci.

This will be a tough match for the Argentine but with the slightly better form and pedigree on clay, I believe Juan Monaco will scrape through this one.
