Another victory for Fed?
"Ferrer is an ideal opponent for the Swiss - he plays at the same tempo pretty much the whole game, he doesn’t mix it up enough on court to trouble the more flamboyant players and struggles to find a plan B if the match isn’t going his way. "
The head-to-head favours the Swiss maestro but current form looks good for the Spaniard, so who will succeed? Ben Caudell brings his verdict
Roger Federer (SWI) v David Ferrer (ESP)
For the third straight ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event, three Spaniards are through to the semi-finals. One of the trio, David Ferrer, is appearing in his seventh ATP World Tour semi-final or better this year. In a phenomenal run of form, Ferrer currently leads the tour in match wins with a record of 33-9 (most wins) and he is also the leader when it comes to clay court wins with a 27-4 mark on this surface. If the Valencia resident reaches the final this week, he will move back into the top 10 of the rankings for the first time since October 2008.
But in the Spaniard's way stands the living legend that is Roger Federer, and unfortunately for Ferrer, on paper this match-up looks to be a formality for the Swiss master. Federer has a 10-0 head-to-head series lead over Ferrer with three of the wins played on clay. Out of the ten wins, Ferrer has managed to only acquire two sets, highlighting the problems the Spaniard is going to have to face when he walks out on court late this evening.
Federer is a master tactician on any surface and he will buoyed by his performance in his previous match against Ernests Gulbis in which he gained his revenge for the loss in Rome only a couple of weeks back.
Much as I would like to see a first win for Ferrer today against Federer, I just can't see it happening. Ferrer is an ideal opponent for the Swiss - he plays at the same tempo pretty much the whole game, he doesn't mix it up enough on court to trouble the more flamboyant players and struggles to find a plan B if the match isn't going his way.
Although I have often said that Ferrer is the second best player on the dirt in the world at the moment, the ten losses he has against Federer must be etched into his memory and I can't see him doing anything more than take a set this evening.
