Wawrinka has a good chance to get a rare win over the man he has admired so much throughout his career
"No doubt Stan’s coach (and Fed’s former coach), Peter Lundgren, had a
few words to say after that defeat and I’m going to trust Wawrinka
enough today to win on the handicap at around [1.8]; Stan is given a 4.5 game start on this handicap."
Stanislas Wawrinka has a poor record against the man he has idolised for much of his career but when he meets Roger Federer today, he might actually run him pretty close.
t was another profitable day at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden yesterday, with the Rafa Nadal v Ivo Karlovic match going exactly as I predicted.
Indeed, Dr Ivo came within a final set breaker of winning it, but our lay of Nadal 2-0 proved on the money with the Spaniard dropping the first set.
Onto day nine and the remaining men's quarter final matches take place, with Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic both short prices to progress.
The closer of the two matches should be Federer against doubles partner Stan Wawrinka and it's about time that Stan took Roger down off that pedestal that he's had him on for years and gave him a close match.
The pair have met 10 times in all competitions, with Stan winning just one (on clay in Monte Carlo, 2009) and taking just three of 23 sets in their personal series.
A classic example of Stan's mental weakness against his idol was in Melbourne this year when he came into the match in the form of his life and went out tamely in straight sets.
No doubt Stan's coach (and Fed's former coach), Peter Lundgren, had a few words to say after that defeat and I'm going to trust Wawrinka enough today to win on the handicap at around [1.8]; Stan is given a 4.5 game start on this handicap.
Apart from an easy victory against Juan Ignacio Chela, Federer has been tested this week by Igor Andreev and Ryan Harrison and if Wawrinka finds the self belief he's shown against other players of late, he has a shot of the win today.
Victories from behind against Nikolay Davydenko and Tomas Berdych highlighted his battling attitude and those tough, long matches should have him in the right form to take on, and possibly beat, Federer today.
Federer hasn't reached the final here since 2006 and the brave might fancy a back of Wawrinka at around [4.7] to continue that sequence, but a safer wager looks to be Stan to win with a start of 4.5 games and that's the one we're going with.
