Santorum looks like the only credible challenger to Mitt Romney
"Though he was defiant in defeat, pressure will now grow upon Gingrich to withdraw. If he were to do so, it is widely assumed that Gingrich would endorse Santorum, allowing the former Pennsylvania Senator to pick up the lion's share of any transferred delegates."
The battle for the Republic nomination is now a two-man fight after more victories for Rick Santorum leave Newt Gingrich out of the race
The outcome of last night's latest set of primaries means we're no clearer about which Republican candidate will face President Obama in November, but it does appear that one extremely significant sub-contest is virtually settled.
Ever since this race began, candidates have battled to become the anti-Romney, capitalising on the widespread scepticism within the party's Conservative base about the long-running favourite and front-runner. Herman Cain, Rick Perry, Michelle Bachmann have all briefly adopted that mantle before blowing out, and after failing to land either Alabama or Mississipi, Newt Gingrich's hopes also appear to be in flames.
That leaves Rick Santorum, backed earlier at [1000.0] for the Presidency and [340.0] for the nomination, in a position to monopolise the anti-Romney vote.
Despite his campaign spending a tiny fraction compared to his rivals, particularly Romney, Santorum won both of these Southern contests, adding to Saturday's victory in Kansas and some impressive gains on Super Tuesday.
Though he was defiant in defeat, pressure will now grow upon Gingrich to withdraw. If he were to do so, it is widely assumed that Gingrich would endorse Santorum, allowing the former Pennsylvania Senator to pick up the lion's share of any transferred delegates.
Romney nevertheless retains a substantial lead and favouritism at [1.18], but this latest failure to seal the deal will further undermine his fading credibility. The race goes on, with contests in Illinois, Missouri and Louisiana over the next fortnight.
