"Candy Cane should be up for a big run in the Unbridled Sidney Stakes at Churchill Downs... "

All eyes will be on Pimlico racecourse a week on Saturday night, when the second leg of the Triple Crown The Preakness Stakes will be run. Unfortunately, it will be run without the Kentucky Derby runner-up Ice Box, who is being saved for the final leg, The Belmont Stakes over a mile-and-a-half trip that promises to suit him very well.
There is action at Pimlico this Saturday as well, and vigilant punters may be able to gauge some crucial characteristics of the track in advance of the big day. But the racing is low-grade and better fare exists elsewhere.
Belmont Park in New York stages the $200,000 Grade 2 Dwyer Stakes at 5:17 pm local time (22.17 GMT) as the ninth of 10 races. There does not look to be a lot between the seven three-year-olds at their best for this nine-furlong contest, but number two Drosselmeyer scores highly on consistency and may not have to step up much at all on his close third to Mission Impazible in the Louisiana Derby last time to prevail.
Over on the West Coast, Hollywood Park puts on the $150,000 Grade 2 Mervyn LeRoy Handicap at 3.04 pm local time (23.04 GMT). Top-weighted Rail Trip would be difficult to beat at his best but has been off the track since September, whereas Tres Borrachos has a poor wins-to-runs ratio and often finishes weakly. It could be worth siding with number 7 Art Currency, who might have needed his last run after a layoff but who has put in a couple of good workouts on the track since.
Calvin Borel has several rides on the Churchill Downs card, one week on from his success there aboard Super Saver in the Kentucky Derby, but none in the afternoon's most valuable race at the track, the Unbridled Sidney Stakes (race nine, 4.59 pm local time, 21.59 GMT).This five-furlong contest for fillies and mares on turf looks another tricky one, but number eight Candy Cane should be up for a big run. She has a good course and distance effort to her name and ran creditably last time despite getting bumped.
