15 January 2011 - the story so far
Ah, the joys of being a racehorse owner. For the lucky few, it's all about success at big Saturday meetings and picking up trophies from various racing dignitaries in front of the Channel 4 cameras. For the majority however, it's a far more spiritual pursuit and one which some experienced owners will no doubt compare with a state of matrimony; horses are accepted warts and all, and owners learn to embrace, even love, their charges' quirks and shortcomings. Obviously, to set out with such an aim smacks of masochism and the Timeform Betfair Racing Club are most certainly aiming towards the more glamorous end of the spectrum when making their purchases, but even those who manage the Club have warmed to our own loveable rogue, Sunrise Safari.*
Of course, it would be more than a little harsh to suggest that Sunrise Safari owes his place on the Club's roster to sentiment. A useful sprinter on his day who has given members trips to some of the country's top courses, Sunrise Safari won twice during his second season in Club colours in 2010, book-ending his campaign with wins in a Leicester handicap (returning a Betfair SP of [33.41]) and a Windsor claimer ([BSP of 11.5]). The interim was, as you've probably guessed, rather hit and miss, but appearances at Glorious Goodwood, the St Leger Festival and Ayr's Western Meeting (in the Bronze Cup) are not to be sniffed at, and at Doncaster in particular our son of Mozart showed he belongs in such company when finishing within a length of winner Baby Strange.
The manner in which Sunrise Safari goes through his races is familiar to just about all Club members by now. Perennially visored, he is a horse who tends to get behind before (hopefully!) finishing with his customary rattle. This can prove dramatic, as was the case at both Leicester and Windsor, but for best effect a strongly-run race is usually required, leaving Sunrise Safari's chance on any given day partly out of his own hands.
Sunrise Safari is a member of the northern contingent among the Club's horses, having been based with Richard Fahey in Malton for the entirety of his time racing in the cerise and white silks. Richard has been training horses for the Club since its inception, actually training the Club's first-ever runner, Golden Bishop at Great Leighs in October 2008. Sadly, both Golden Bishop and Great Leighs were to fall by the way before long, but the relationship between the Club and Fahey has gone from strength to strength, Richard having now trained more winners for us than any other handler. Richard, who is finally gaining just recognition as one of the best trainers in the country, is also a proven dab hand with sprinters, the likes of Knot In Wood, Utmost Respect and Kaldoun Kingdom all supplying him with big-race success in recent seasons.
