22 January 2011 - Ascot 2m Juvenile Hurdle
Plenty Pocket was sent off the [5.6] second favourite behind Grandouet (who is now favourite for the Triumph) on his hurdling debut but failed to come up to expectations, not jumping fluently early on and effectively ruining his chance by pulling too hard, finding little in the ground when asked for an effort and coming home in his own time. Plenty Pocket's rider, Ian Popham, reported that the gelding had a breathing problem. The likelihood now is that Plenty Pocket will be tried on better ground with the aid of a tongue strap.
15 January 2011 - the story so far
Plenty Pocket is one of two horses owned by the Timeform Betfair Racing Club in partnership with patron Clive Smith (Indian Daudaie is the other) at the stable of champion NH trainer Paul Nicholls. Clive has already had plenty of success with French imports at Ditcheat and, hopefully, his lucky touch will rub off on the club.
As already mentioned, Plenty Pocket started his career in France, where he ran six times on the Flat for Elie Lellouche, making his racecourse debut in the April of his 3-y-o season. That debut proved to be a winning one, as he accounted for a couple of subsequent listed winners in an 11f newcomers event at Longchamp, and it wasn't long before he went in again, making all in a minor event over 1½m at Saint-Cloud in June (unsuited by drop in trip in between).
Plenty Pocket failed to match that form on either of his next two starts, the latter of which came in a 15f listed event at Deauville, but he signed off his time in France with a career-best performance when third in a 1½m minor event at Craon. Plenty Pocket showed useful form in that race at Craon and looked an unlucky loser, staying on strongly at the finish after he was denied a clear run a furlong out.
It almost goes without saying that the intention is to go hurdling with Plenty Pocket, and both he and Indian Daudaie have had the pleasure of chasing Kauto Star down Ditcheat's gallops (watch the video here). Paul reported that Plenty Pocket was the quicker of the pair on the short Flat gallop, as perhaps he should be considering their respective pedigrees, and he has been impressed with Plenty Pocket's progress, handling everything asked of him at home with an excellent temperament.
