INDIAN DAUDAIE 4 ch.g
Trainer: Paul Nicholls
Current Timeform Rating: H 135
18 March 2011 - Cheltenham Class 2 Martin Pipe Conditional Jockey's Handicap
Although we could have only realistically been hoping for a top eight finish in such a typically competitive race, Indian Daudaie, the only four-year-old in the field, tapped into some of his residual potential and finished a fantastic fourth, putting up his best performance since coming over from France. Close up from the outset, Indian Daudaie was sadly just not able to keep up in the closing stages but now that he has proved his stamina, a lot more doors open. What's more, the smashing attitude he showed when battling all the way up the hill impressed us immensely and, whilst the handicapper may have him about right, he can always revert to juveniles before the season is out, whilst chasing is probably the route to go next season.
Nearer to hand, the idea will probably be to get him out once more this spring (he ate up fine over the weekend and will have a few easy days during the early part of this week) as there are a few options at Aintree and also possible races at both Ayr and Cheltenham. We're going to have a natter with Paul over the next week or so and see what he thinks.
12 February 2011 - Leopardstown 2m Grade 1 Spring Juvenile Hurdle
Indian Daudaie was sent off second favourite but was unable to build on his encouraging start for the yard at Cheltenham, beaten 7½ lengths into fifth behind Dermot Weld's promising filly, Unaccompanied. Basically, Indian Daudaie wasn't quick enough - that was the view of Paul, Niall and Ruby, too - and it's looking increasingly like he's going to need further than 2m.
There were still positives to take from the performance, however, as, despite not being the biggest, he jumped superbly, so much so that Niall reported he would make a cracking novice chaser in time. Also, according to Timeform ratings, he wasn't actually that far below the figure he ran to Cheltenham, just 4 lb in fact.
29 January 2011 - Cheltenham 2m 1f Grade 2 JCB Triumph Hurdle Trial
A useful field gathered for the race formerly known as the Finesse, with Indian Daudaie starting third in the betting behind Local Hero and Third intention. Those were the three involved in the finish, too, and in that order, with Local Hero scoring by 2 lengths and 2¾ lengths, but Indian Daudaie emerges with as much credit as the first pair bearing in mind he was conceding them a penalty. The race wasn't really run to suit Indian Daudiae, either, tapped for toe when the pace quickened at the bottom of the hill, and the way he stuck to his task suggests he'll be capable of better when faced with more emphasis on stamina.
Paul said "I thought we were a little outpaced at the business end but I was encouraged to see him continue to battle up the hill. I'm sure he will come on massively for this performance and he will improve for two things, softer ground and a bit further.
"I haven't entirely ruled out going over to Ireland for the Grade 1 Spring Juvenile Hurdle next Sunday, where he might get softer ground, although that is very tentative at the moment. More likely we will look to find one more race before hopefully going back to Cheltenham for the Festival.
"We'll enter him for four of the novice hurdles at Cheltenham (Supreme, Triumph, Fred Winter and Neptune) and I also think the novice events over a bit further at Aintree will suit him."
15 January 2011 - the story so far
Kauto Star; Master Minded; Indian Daudaie? It's safe to say that horses which Clive Smith has had a hand in bringing to Britain from France have done rather well for themselves so far, so we're all hoping that one of his latest purchases, this time in collaboration with the Timeform Betfair Racing Club, can enjoy similar success.
If Indian Daudaie represents new territory for Clive Smith, then the same can surely be said for the TBRC. Having previously scoured various sales rings across Britain to source the club's horses, this time we've dipped our toe into Gallic waters, trying to tap into the French market which has provided success for so many prominent British and Irish National Hunt owners in the last decade or so.
A half-brother to winning hurdler around two miles Joyau d'Orfausse and the first British-trained representative of his sire, 2001 Sandown Mile winner Nicobar, Indian Daudaie was originally in training with Yannick Fouin. Raced once on the Flat, a career change was soon in the offing for Indian Daudaie, and he was to run three times in 3-y-o hurdles at Auteuil for that yard, soon putting a fall on his debut over timber behind him to win his second outing by half a length from Suerte Y Exito.
Another chunk of improvement was forthcoming once Indian Daudaie was fast-tracked to Grade 1 company on his third and final start for Fouin, when he outperformed unflattering odds of 37/1 on the Pari-Mutuel to finish fifteen lengths second of ten finishers behind progressive Marcel Rolland inmate Tanais du Chenet in the Prix Cambaceres, a race won in 2008 by a certain Long Run.
It was that run that was to implore interest from Britain, and before long Indian Daudaie was moved to Paul Nicholls. Needless to say, four-time champion trainer Nicholls has no shortage of promising juvenile hurdlers, but hopes are high for Indian Daudaie, who is being handed a fairly ambitious task on his intended British debut, in the Grade 2 Finesse Juvenile Hurdle at Cheltenham's Festival Trials Day on January 29th.
It's obviously far too early to say whether current odds of [32.0] for the Triumph Hurdle offer any real value about Indian Daudaie, but with such lofty targets mooted at this early stage it wouldn't be giving much away to say that the big spring festivals are his ultimate aim should things go to plan between now and March.
