15 January 2011 - the story so far

Arabian Spirit joined the Timeform Betfair Racing Club from Ed Dunlop's yard after being sold for 33,000 guineas at the Newmarket Horses in Training sale in October 2009 and has consistently given members a run for their money.

Arabian Spirit developed into a useful handicapper in his time with Ed Dunlop, winning at Chepstow and Kempton in 2008, and also finishing runner-up in the valuable Spring Cup over a mile at Newbury in April the following year. He ended that season out of form, but as a result had dropped to an attractive mark ahead of the sales, starting his career with new trainer Richard Fahey in 2010 rated just 79, down from a high of 92.

Arabian Spirit finished third under stable jockey Paul Hanagan on his reappearance in a Ripon handicap in 2010 and filled the same place on his fourth start that season at Haydock, though even those performances were some way below what he had been capable of in his pomp in 2009.

As a result, Arabian Spirit was down on a career-low mark of 75 prior to his fifth outing in 2010. Sent off at [7.2] in a 1m handicap at Ayr, Arabian Spirit bounced back to form in no uncertain terms, producing his best effort since the previous year's Spring Cup and showing that he didn't necessarily need soft ground to be seen at his best (acts on polytrack, heavy and good to firm going). Although, Arabian Spirit did not win again 2010, he continued to run with credit, finishing a close third in well-contested events at Newmarket and Ayr on two of his final three outings that year.

Arabian Spirit was subsequently tried over hurdles, at Musselburgh in November, and though there wasn't much encouragement to be gleaned from that, tapering off when asked for an effort, he will start the 2011 Flat turf season on a BHA mark of 86, which is likely to prove within his compass bearing in mind the form he showed late in 2011, in front of subsequent Cesarewitch winner Credit Swap in that aforementioned Newmarket race.
