Tony McCoy has fond memories of Uttoxeter and rides big-race favourite Synchronised at 15:00

What's this? Midlands National day at Uttoxeter and the ground isn't on the testing side of heavy. Still, Timeform are never averse to change and maybe the shock going description will spur us on to Placepot glory after a gruelling Cheltenham.

13:55 - Speed Dating could win this hard held if the combination of McCoy and blinkers (wore them to good effect on Flat) work the oracle, though Beau Lake could hardly be any more solid on the back of two clear-cut wins on testing ground for today's jockey Paddy Brennan.

14:25 - This looks competitive, prompting more lines than deemed necessary in the first. Barbatos will have plenty of the pool on him, though there is a slight stamina doubt and taking three of his opponents in the hope the likely favourite doesn't get home looks the way to go. The suggestions, in order of preference, are Basford Bob (likely improver for staying handicaps), Red Harbour (trip more suitable) and Burnt Oak (optimum conditions and latest defeat forgiveable).

Another sluggard gets the second vote, namely Halcon Genelardais, who's sure to find this test more to his liking than the two hunters he's tackled so far this season. The return of Robert Thornton looks a boon to the latter's chance, too.

15:35 - Honourable Arthur keeps pulling out enough to defy the handicapper and whatever beats him will probably win. There aren't too many obvious candidates to fill that role, though Zarrafakt seems most potent when fresh as here and he did look very good in making a successful chasing debut in the autumn

16:10 - A dire bunch on the whole, with trainer-change angle A Bid Too Far a fly in the ointment. Rossbrin arrives in good heart, however, and a reproduction of his latest Huntingdon effort should see him in the three. Royal Chatelier would ideally prefer a longer trip, but his penultimate win is compelling in the context of this race.

16:45 - Odd to see a bumper gatecrashing a Placepot card nowadays, but at least Howard's Legacy and What A Warrior have plenty of experience to call upon and both should make their presence felt.
