Alan King: Saddles Midnight Appeal at Wincanton
"Midnight Appeal appears a fluent jumper and is still very much open to improvement over the larger obstacles."
A national hunt-heavy day of racing in prospect and consequently two thirds of today's tips from Timeform's Free Form Website are over the sticks.
Wincanton is the first port of call, where Midnight Appeal (15:35) holds every chance of adding to his debut win over fences in the novices' handicap chase. Seemingly appreciating the three-month break between his penultimate start and his success last time at Huntingdon, Midnight Appeal appears a fluent jumper and is still very much open to improvement over the larger obstacles. With most likely danger Randjo seemingly not the most straightforward of characters, this is a great opportunity for Midnight Appeal to continue his upward curve.
Continuing at Wincanton, Sunley Peace (17:10) should be very competitive in the closing maiden hurdle with trainer Gary Moore in such fine form. Pulled up on his hurdling debut, he was a different proposition last time when a good second to the useful novice hurdler Gibb River at Wincanton, and is open to further improvement. Previously a useful stayer on the Flat, Sunley Peace had been off over 3 years before making first start over jumps and it would be a disappointment if he couldn't win a race such as this. Mawsem is the main danger, but he may be meeting a horse on his way to better things.
We end the day in the evening at Kempton, but Wrecking Crew (19:00) should be worth waiting for in the mile and a half handicap. Granted, it may seem a little strange to be nominating a seven-year-old maiden as a bet of the day, but Wrecking Crew is still relatively unexposed after only having 16 lifetime starts. Despite having run well for an amateur on his last two starts, it's seen as a bonus that he is again reunited with a professional jockey and it's hoped the stronger handling will enable him to finally get his head in front. Favourite Galiotto seems to have his quirks, so even though his yard is in great form, more resistance may come from the veteran Little Richard.
