"Today’s sharp two miles on better ground looks ideal for Shuil Royale..."

It's 'Salt Awareness Week' but it was Elijah Pepper and just a neck and a short head that cruelly denied Sam Randall a 1-2-3 treble at Wolverhampton yesterday. A chicken and mushroom pie (containing 7.5g of salt or the equivalent found in 15 packets of crisps) from a certain pub chain is said to have lightened super Sam's mood after and hopefully it'll be pies all round again if today's three selections at Kempton come in.

David Arbuthnot's Topolski was a winner for this column at Newton Abbot on Sunday and Shuil Royale (14.10) can give the Newbury handler another success in the first at Kempton this afternoon. Shuil Royale won both his starts in bumpers and wasn't disgraced on his debut over hurdles at Sandown last month, taking a good hold and not given a hard time once his chance had gone. That has the look of a warm race, with the winner Hildisvini having gone in again at Lingfield yesterday, and the odds-on runner-up Kid Cassidy, incidentally a half-brother to Shuil Royale, looking open to a fair bit of improvement himself. Today's sharp two miles on better ground looks ideal for Shuil Royale.

Gary Moore continues to chip in the winners and his Psi (14.40) needs backing to open his jumping account in the novices' handicap chase over two and a half miles. The six-year-old ran a blinder behind the thriving Midnight Appeal at Wincanton a fortnight ago, jumping well and briefly getting upsides at the last before the winner took off. Off the same mark today, Psi will be hard to beat if in the same form.

Every season Venetia Williams has a horse or two that continues to defy the handicapper and rack up a sequence, and in Rileyev (16.25) she's got another progressive chaser on her hands. The six-year-old will find life tougher once his new mark kicks in, but under a penalty is just 4 lb higher today than for last week's facile Plumpton win, and this handicap doesn't look the strongest for the track. He can make it four wins in five starts.
