Two of today's selections are at Southwell
"the form of his [Ace Master's] most recent third couldn’t have worked out any better, the winner, second and fourth all having gone in next time."
It's hardly the most interesting day's racing, but the Timeform Free Form team have come up with three bets nonetheless...
The opener at Market Rasen looks a weak race and should prove a winnable opportunity for Michael Blake's Lamps. Although there's a chance Lamps was slightly flattered in showing much-improved form when second at Sandown last time, coming through late from off a strong pace, he's worth the benefit of the doubt for now having caught the eye with how he travelled at Newbury the time before. Hurdling debutant Higgy's Ragazzo is priced up on connections (Henderson and McCoy), making the market for Lamps, who, though admittedly Higgy's Ragazzo's inferior on the level, was far from exposed after running just three times for Brian Meehan.
Empress Royal could easily prove a class above the opposition in the sprint handicap at Southwell (14:15), but she's making her reappearance and also has to prove herself on fibresand, so it's probably best to look elsewhere. Kevin Ryan has had his horses in good form all winter and can add to his tally with Go Maggie Go. She's no great shakes, but she had shaped as if getting better and can easily be forgiven her latest effort, when hassled for the lead trying six furlongs. The drop back to the minimum is sure to be in her favour today and she can use her speed to burn off her rivals on a track where the pace often holds up.
The final bet also comes at Southwell, in the maiden handicap for 3-y-os at 16:15. There's probably a couple of dark horses in there who are yet to reveal their full hand, but best handicapped on what they have shown is Ace Master. Roy Bowring's gelding showed a liking for Southwell last year, in the first three on all three starts at the course, and the form of his most recent third couldn't have worked out any better, the winner, second and fourth all having gone in next time. The trip is an unknown, going up to 1m for the first time, but the way Ace Master stayed on last time suggests it shouldn't be a problem.
