Today's best bet comes in the last at Wolverhampton
"The winner of a claimer last winter, when he also made the frame in a handicap off a mark of 75, War of The Roses is able to race off 59 tonight and really should take advantage."
Cheltenham has been and gone for another year and there's a feeling of after the Lord Mayor's show today, but it's our job to pick three horses to do the business and, as we all know, a 3/1 winner at Wolves pays the same as a 3/1 winner at Cheltenham. So here we go...
Someone once told me that 'if you snooze you lose', but you can afford to have a Saturday afternoon power nap on the sofa (after the Midlands National, of course) on this occasion and recuperate from all the Cheltenham shenanigans because the first selection doesn't run until 16:20. Prince Massini is the horse in question. In a race at Ffos Las where half of the six runners are trained by Evan Williams, Prince Massini looks the pick of the trio having proven resurgent over hurdles this season. A winner at Uttoxeter and Chepstow over the winter, he shot up to a mark of 105 prior to his latest run at Fakenham but is able to race off just 97 reverted to fences, over which he is equally as good if not better when on song. It's a competitive affair for all the small field, but at [6.8] Prince Massini is well worth a few quid.
The second selection comes on the polytrack at Lingfield, where Estonia looks a good bet at [3.5] to confirm recent C&D form with Black Baccara in the 17:15. Placed on her three starts since her previous two wins in December, Estonia looked value for more than the three-quarter length margin when successful last time, travelling strongly held up and coming through with a late run. Today's race should be run to suit and similar tactics will likely be employed by Luke Morris who is on board again.
There's another wait before the final selection runs, as it comes in the last race at Wolverhampton's evening meeting (21:20). The Blue Dog is understandably favourite on the back of a couple of seconds recently, but she'll have to improve if the well-handicapped War of The Roses can rediscover some of his old sparkle. There were signs of just that at Southwell recently, where he travelled strongly for a long way on his first try on the fibresand surface and, back on the more familiar polytrack, he's expected to get closer to last year's form. The winner of a claimer last winter, when he also made the frame in a handicap off a mark of 75, War of The Roses is able to race off 59 tonight and really should take advantage.
