Mark Johnston: Runs Exemplary at Wolverhampton this evening
"There are any number of things in Exemplary's favour today – stable form, proven on the surface, has gone well fresh in the past, shapes as if likely to stay two miles (bred to stay), will probably get an easy lead..."
Two chasers at Fontwell and one all-weather handicapper for Friday, courtesy of the Timeform Free Form site...
Marias Rock made a winning chasing debut returning from a lengthy lay-off at Plumpton in December, and she has a good chance of making it two from two over fences in Sussex in the 14:05 at Fontwell. Marias Rock's profile suggests she's difficult to train, but she's been given a short break since Plumpton, and an 8 lb rise for that success doesn't look harsh given that the race has produced a handful of subsequent winners. The slight step up in trip today should be in Marias Rock's favour (stayed much further over hurdles), and given that she's taking on a largely exposed bunch today, prices around the [4.5] mark look fair enough.
There haven't been many NH yards in better heart in the past few weeks than that of Victor Dartnall, seven of whose 27 runners since New Year's Day have obliged. Of his four runners at Fontwell today, the one with the best chance is probably Randjo in the handicap chase at 15:15. Randjo went in on chasing debut at Wincanton back in May on his final start for the Alners, and shaped well when fourth over C&D starting out for his new yard in October. He was much too keen in a first-time visor when tailed off at Taunton when last seen in November, but has been given plenty of time to get over the hard race he had that day, and is now just 1 lb higher than at Wincanton.
Speaking of in-form trainers, there isn't one in the country, NH or Flat, currently going better than Mark Johnston, half of whose 14 runners over the past fortnight have won. His only runner today is Exemplary in the two-mile handicap at Wolverhampton (17:40) and it seems to me that he should be clear favourite rather than just disputing affairs at the head of the market with last-time C&D winner Treacle Tart. Exemplary won a handicap a Leicester off today's mark back in April, beating one that subsequently proved useful, but didn't really go on himself and ended 2010 on a low note. There are any number of things in Exemplary's favour today, however - stable form, proven on the surface, has gone well fresh in the past, shapes as if likely to stay two miles (bred to stay), will probably get an easy lead - it would be no surprise to see him bounce back, and the [3.55] currently available looks well worth taking.
