"I Confess is in good heart, is likely to get an easy lead from stall one, and should finish second at worst"
I don't know much about British racing these days, especially any that takes place on the all-weather, but I've somehow been given the task of putting together today's placepot from Wolverhampton and I'm hoping for better luck than Mr Baker endured yesterday.
14.30 - Amateur riders' handicaps are never the easiest to solve, but very few of the 12 runners set to contest the opener come into the race in any kind of form, so it's very difficult to look past Noah Jameel, who looked better than ever when winning at Kempton less than a week ago. Paint The Town Red hasn't been with the in-form Richard Guest yard long, will be suited the likely strong pace, and should be up to placing from a basement mark.
15.00 - This looks a little more straightforward than the opening division and it's difficult to oppose the likely favourite Captain Cool. A winner over this trip at Lingfield earlier in the month, Captain Cool is still lower in the weights than when successful on the turf last year and can normally be relied upon to give his running. Wrecking Crew has been shaping as if he has more to give from this kind of mark in similar company of late and wouldn't need to improve greatly to make the three.
15.30 - Overwhelm has had her sights lowered significantly on her first start for Richard Fahey and rates as banker material. She looked an out-and-out speedster for Andrew Reid at 3 yrs, seeing off a pair of subsequent winners when successful in a course-and-distance maiden in July, and is strongly fancied to make all.
16.00 - Erinjay looks certain to go off a warm favourite for the seller, but Michael Wigham's representative is something of an all-or-nothing type and is best opposed for 'placepotting' purposes. I Confess is in good heart, is likely to get an easy lead from stall one, and should finish second at worst.
16.30 - The fact that Maher has already had four chances to break his duck in maidens isn't too much of a concern given the yard's patient approach, and the form of his second to Art History over course and distance last time is by some way the best on offer from those with experience. It's certainly difficult to see three improving past him in what looks a weak maiden.
17.00 - The last leg appears to be the best opportunity for us to get a result in today's pot, with the temperamental Strong Vigilance a dodgy favourite and John Potts now in the grip of the handicapper. The chances of Gulf of Aqaba, King of Connacht and Corrib all look to have been underrated, especially Cathy Gannon's mount, and with lines saved in the earlier races, we can justify taking all three.
