There's no hunter in the placepot at Newton Abbot and therefore no call for me to trawl through Mackenzie and Harris in order to try and get a handle on some tenuous pieces of point form, as would be required at Ffos Las. Easy decision then.

14:00 - Only two can be fancied with any degree of certitude in the opening maiden hurdle. Of the pair it makes sense to side with Glassawine after an encouraging start to his hurdling career at Taunton a fortnight ago. The step back in trip will not be in favour of Alla Svelta, so it's best to give David Pipe's juvenile the chance to progress past him, though a mere reproduction of that last effort is sure to be enough to see him make the first three.

14:30 - Trooper Clarence was impressive when winning at Kempton on Saturday and is bound to be popular here under a penalty. He had very little to beat there, though, and it was only twelve days ago that Rileyev finished two lengths in front of him at Ludlow. Rileyev was receiving 7 lb from Trooper Clarence on that occasion and is another 6 lb better off with him now. No brainer, then, with the rest easily opposablee Rileyev makes for a sound banker even with just the two places up for grabs.

15:05 - Calico Rose took a marked step forward on his handicap debut at Taunton last month, the first-time cheekpieces evidently helping to some degree, and a 8 lb rise for that success probably leaves her favourably treated. Bill Turner's horses have been going well of late, something which points to the chance of Navajo Nation on his first start since October. He may not have the scope to progress as some, but he's just the solid sort we're looking for when compiling a placepot.

15:40 - The novice chase is trappy to put it mildly, especially with the form choice, Ikorodu Road, having back-to-back falls to put behind him. As such, take all four to ensure progress to the fifth leg - that's Rebel du Maquis, Quartz de Thaix, Ace High and Ikorodu Road - and hope for a 'result' with likely outsider (but far from a no-hoper) Ace High.

16:15 - Round The Horn finally seems to have been straightened out and is comfortably the likeliest winner of the twenty-two furlong handicap hurdle, but his career has been one of precious little racing and it's probably still too soon to have complete trust in him. Boomtown Kat and Timetoring make appeal elsewhere. Both have generally been running with credit of late and look more solid than the rest when it comes to grabbing a place.

16:50 - Themilanhorse is bound to popular on the back of an encouraging debut and, receiving 7 lb from Hayjack, it's very difficult indeed to envisage him failing to make the first three.
