The final furlong at Kempton
"**Screaming Brave**... must have a good chance today back at a more suitable trip off a career-low mark, and in the worst handicap he’s ever contested."
Kempton is the venue for today's placepot perm...
13:45 - This is probably the trickiest race on the card, so we might have to take three to make sure. In terms of handicapping Broughtons Paradis is arguably the most interesting one, racing off her 10 lb lower all-weather mark, but she does tend to be ridden with plenty of patience, which may not be ideal given a lack of apparent pace in the field. A couple who might be better placed are Princess Lexi (twice made all on turf in summer 2010) and Supatov (bred to be useful/has had much less racing than most of these), so they're the two we'll take by way of insurance.
14:15 - Screaming Brave only ran once on the Flat in 2010, when a blatant non-stayer over two miles at Lingfield in December. Earlier that year he had shown that he retains all his ability with some fairly useful efforts over hurdles, and he must have a good chance today back at a more suitable trip off a career-low mark, and in the worst handicap he's ever contested. We can probably afford a more speculative one to back him up, and Pascalina certainly fits that billing. She's plummeted in the weights since a reasonably encouraging handicap debut, and might just be sharper for her recent return.
14:45 - Only a small field for this sprint handicap, but they should nevertheless go a good gallop with four of them habitual prominent racers. That scenario should suit Morermaloke, who was delivered fast and late to get off the mark in a maiden at Lingfield last time. That was admittedly a very simple task for Morermaloke, but he is unexposed at five furlongs and travels as if he has plenty more ability than a mark of 73 suggests.
15:15 - Not hard to put a line through more than a few of these for various reasons, and the ones we're left with are Elhamri and Super Frank, both of whom are in form and favoured by the weights. The former is a non-runner, so we're banking on the latter by default.
15:45 - The obvious thing in Karate's favour is his yard, which is nine from 15 over the last fortnight. Admittedly he didn't show much at Southwell on his reappearance, but poor efforts there are easier to forgive than elsewhere and there's little doubt he's on a good mark judged on his second on nursery debut at Windsor in the summer, particularly with the step up to seven furlongs likely to suit. Karate is one of a few who might get involved in a battle for the lead, so we'll also take Kuala Limper, who should be tracking the pace rather than disputing it. He probably won't need to improve much if at all on his maiden form to take a hand.
16:15 - Lovers Causeway will probably win this if he doesn't go off too hard with Kidlat, but just in case that scenario does transpire we'll opt for the somewhat speculative insurance policy of Kindlelight Sun, who figures on a good mark on the form he showed when winning his only other start exactly one year ago.
