Will it be good going for Nicholls' runners?
"I have had this race in mind for Tricky Trickster for a while and he should relish the stamina test and ground, but he needs to show us some of his old spark on the racecourse."
Cheltenham is over but racing rarely stops and Paul sends a pair of horses to Uttoxeter on Saturday and Newton Abbot on Sunday. Read his thoughts on each here
Saturday
Uttoxeter, 14:25
Red Harbour: Needed the run and probably didn't see out the trip in soft ground when well beaten behind Grands Crus at Haydock in November and again faded in the closing stages when sixth at Wincanton last time, though he was only beaten just over 7 lengths there and it was a fair effort. Has been dropped 3lb as a result of those efforts and has Ruby back on board. Ruby won on him in the EBF Final at Sandown in March; there is a suspicion that the trip on soft ground will again test his stamina but he is fit and well and fairly handicapped.
Uttoxeter, 15:00
Tricky Trickster: The good news is that Synchronised keeps the weights down. Showed what a class horse he is when winning the Aon at Newbury in February and I suppose we were all guilty of getting carried away with that win as we went to the Gold Cup as a 12-1 shot, only to be outclassed and finishing tailed off. That probably left its mark on him and he finished a well beaten ninth in the National. We gave him a breathing operation after a very poor effort at Cheltenham first time up and I was very surprised to see him heavily punted when we took him for a sharpener in a Newbury novice hurdle last time. I have had this race in mind for him for a while and he should relish the stamina test and ground, but he needs to show us some of his old spark on the racecourse.
Sunday
Newton Abbot, 14:15
Water Garden: Went off favourite for a Fontwell bumper on his debut but was beaten a length, the pair 17 lengths clear. Has failed to translate that form in two hurdle starts to date, where quite frankly he has been very disappointing. In am just hoping that he can show more today on better ground.
Newton Abbot, 15:45
Aldertune: Is a versatile performer in terms of ground and distance and followed up his bumper and hurdle wins when getting off the mark over fences at Chepstow last time. He only just held on there after idling, so we put the blinkers on him for the first time to help him concentrate. Needs to improve to beat some of these.
