Will Newmarket suit today's recommendations?

Today's best bet is the Charlie Hills-trained Safarjal in the opening fillies' maiden at Newmarket at 13:30.

I was on duty when the daughter of Marju made her debut at Salisbury in September, and was very taken by her performance in finishing a tenderly-handled sixth behind the same owner's Firdaws.

Miss Cap Estel, who reopposes, was a place in front of Safarjal there, but it was the Hamdan al Maktoum second string who really caught the eye. Clearly green in the early stages, she started to run on at halfway, and kept on stoutly without being subject to more than hand riding to be never nearer, and looking to have plenty of running left. I predicted that she would be the recipient of a large "P" for that performance, and while my friends in Halifax haven't delivered on that, I doubt that this strapping filly will disappoint me.

Top-rated here is the James Eustace runner Fulney, who is respected, but the form of her Leicester second was let down by the fourth recently, and my feeling is that Fulney will bounce from that huge effort where she was fully fit, and subject to quite a hard ride.
Safarjal has most to fear from likely favourite Diala, who found only Lyric of Light too strong here on her debut. With that filly going on to land the May Hill and Fillies Mile subsequently, Diala is sure to be a warm order, and I'm not looking to knock her chances. What that means, however, is that the selection will go off at bigger odds than she ought to, and I'd recommend her win and place.

In the closing race at Newmarket (17:20), I like the look of David Lanigan's Main Sequence. The former assistant to Henry Cecil is not known for having his juveniles ready to fire on debut, and it was unsurprising to see Main Sequence start at 50/1 for his debut at Yarmouth despite being a home-bred Niarchos Family colt out of a useful winning half-sister to Tattersalls Gold Cup winner and Eclipse third Shiva.

Lanigan's other juvenile runners in 2011 hadn't troubled the judge, after all. It was therefore hugely encouraging to see the son of Aldebaran make a winning debut, despite looking green all round. Slowly away, he recovered despite looking less than fully clued up and asserted for just a single tap with the whip. There appears to be loads more to come from the colt, and the handicapper has been rather lenient with an opening mark of 79.

Lack of experience may well be his undoing against some battle-hardened rivals here, but it's hard to think he won't prove far superior to most of these rivals in the future, so at odds of around [6.4], he's worth backing. Of his rivals, I thought Tingo In The Tale was the one who might prove most troublesome.
