There could be some long odds winners at Doncaster on Saturday
"Squadron [8.0] could further add to his tally in Doncaster’s 3m handicap hurdle @ 14:20."
Timeform Radio Pundit Jeremy Grayson heads to Yorkshire for his Saturday afternoon bets...
Several of the line-up in Doncaster's feature the sportingbet.com Grimthorpe Chase (15.25) could conceivably find even 3m2f around this galloping track too sharp, given their intentions to run in the Eider last week and their ultimate target of the Grand National.
Neither comment really applies to Gypsy George, who looked back to his best over just shy of this trip on goodish ground at Ayr last time. A drop of 2lb for chasing home an extremely well-handicapped Ballabriggs there looks generous, especially as he'd have finished closer but for a mistake two out.
Progressive December course winner Mill Side still looks reasonably treated, and is also considered with drying conditions in his favour.
Things have got steadily better for Alan King on course in the last few weeks, notwithstanding Triumph Hurdle aspirant Mille Chief's recent setback off it, and Squadron [8.2] could further add to his tally in Doncaster's 3m handicap hurdle (14.20). It's best not to take too harsh a view of his midfield finish on seasonal reappearance at Newbury three weeks ago, as he was hampered at an inopportune moment. In any case, it's worth remembering that he's improved markedly from first run to second on both of his previous hurdling campaigns.
Effective at up to 2m on the Flat, stamina tests over hurdles should be within compass. He's nicely treated right now, too, back at the 130 mark off which he ran Crack Away Jack close 17 months ago.
Berwick Law could prove the chief threat if answering his own stamina questions.
