Sprinter Sacre is favourite for the 2013 Champion Chase

Sprinter Sacre has been given a Timeform master rating of 174p following his brilliant win in the Arkle Chase on the opening day of the 2012 Cheltenham Festival, making him the most highly rated novice chaser of the modern era...

The Nicky Henderson-trained six-year-old is considered to have run to a performance rating of 169 in beating Cue Card by seven lengths - with his other four rivals beaten a long way - and has been given an extra 5 lb for the ease of his victory.

The "p" symbol on his rating also reflects the likelihood that he could improve on even this remarkably high rating given the chance.

Winners of the Arkle this century have included subsequent winners of the Champion Chase in Moscow Flyer, Azertyuiop, Voy Por Ustedes and Sizing Europe, and Sprinter Sacre has already been made favourite for the 2013 edition of that race.

Sizing Europe gets to defend his title on day two of the 2012 Cheltenham Festival, and is a short price to win, but he may well have to better his current figure of 172 if he meets the young pretender thereafter.
