The home team are a popular choice in the betting as Ryder fever takes hold

Long-range weather forecasts predict a weekend of wind and rain in south Wales and it looks odds on we are in for a soggy Ryder Cup.

And that could be the reason that Europe are shortening in the betting - as punters latch onto the home team's perceived preference for the autumnal conditions

As of midday, Monday, Europe were available to back at [1.69] with the Americans out to [2.94] with the tie [13.5].

A word of warning though - as a (very) amateur golfer I have planned many a round on the strength of a five-day forecast only to see sunny conditions turn into torrential rain. The bottom line is this: don't base all your bets on the strength of a long-range and generally unreliable weather forecast (although it wouldn't surprise anyone to see rain in Wales in October).

Trading has been getting under way outside of the main winner market with money focusing on each team's top point scorer after the three days of action.

Young guns Rory McIlroy and Martin Kaymer are disputing favouritism for the position of Europe's post-weekend no.1 with the unflappable German US PGA champion heading the betting at [7.2]. McIlroy is [7.6] while Lee Westwood, who returns from a long injury layoff at Celtic Manor, and Graeme McDowell both available to back at [8.6].

After that quartet, every other player is in double figures with Ian Poulter - top scorer in 2008 - and Luke Donald - who comes into the tournament after a second-place finish at the prestigious Tour Championship - trading at [10.0].

There's a familiar name at the top of the US list where captain's pick Tiger Woods is the predictable favourite at [6.8].

Steve Stricker [7.0] and Phil Mickelson [7.8] are close behind with tour Championship champion Jim Furyk [9.0] and Dustin Johnson [9.8] the other men trading in single figures.
